That covers the eye health exam, the refraction, and the contact lens fitting. Lenses themselves are ordered separately once your doctor has picked what works on your eyes. Walk-ins are welcome, and you can book online in about a minute.
A contact lens exam is an eye exam plus a fitting
The first half is the same as any comprehensive exam. The extra time goes on the lenses themselves.
The eye health exam first, lenses out
Retinal photographs, pressures and the alignment checks read correctly only on your natural eye, so we ask you to take your lenses out before we start. Bring the case. Nothing touches the eye and we don’t use dilation drops, so you can drive yourself home.
Your lenses go back in
Once the first round of refraction is done, your lenses go back on and the fitting work starts. If you’re new to contacts, this is where we start you on a trial rather than on something you’ve already paid for.
We record how the lens sits and moves
Short videos through the slit lamp, one eye at a time. A lens can be exactly the right power and still be the wrong fit, and the fit is what the video shows. Your doctor watches these, not a description of them.
How you actually wear them
Hours a day, how they feel by evening, what you’re in now, whether you sleep in them. Comfort at hour twelve matters more than comfort at hour one, and that only comes out if we ask.
A second refraction, over the lenses
This measures the vision you’re really getting in the contacts, which is not always what the glasses prescription predicts. It’s the difference between a number on paper and how you actually see on the drive home.
Your doctor finalizes the contact lens prescription
Or picks a trial pair to try first and brings you back for a short follow-up. A contact lens prescription is its own document, separate from your glasses prescription, because it carries the brand, the base curve and the diameter as well as the power.
Which lenses we fit
Today we fit and order Johnson & Johnson lenses, the Acuvue family. More brands are being added, so if you’re settled on something we don’t stock yet, ask when you book and we’ll tell you where that stands rather than guess.
Your prescription is yours either way. Fill it here, fill it anywhere, and we hand it to you before you leave whether or not you buy lenses from us.
New to contacts
Nobody expects you to get a lens in on the first try. We teach you to put them in and take them out before you leave with anything, and you go home on a trial pair rather than a year’s supply of something you haven’t worn yet.
Renewing a prescription
Bring the lenses you’re in now, and the boxes if you still have them. Brand, base curve and diameter all go into the prescription, and having the boxes saves the guesswork. If they’ve stopped feeling right by evening, say so before we renew.
Ordering your lenses
Once your doctor has settled on a lens, we order it. If it’s not something we have in the shop, we order it in and call you the moment it lands, then you come back for a short follow-up to check the fit is doing what it did in the room.
Glasses are still the shorter visit. If you want both, book the contact lens exam and we’ll do the glasses prescription in the same sitting, then walk you over to the frame wall while you’re already here.
Questions people ask first
Why does a contact lens exam cost more than a glasses exam?
Because it’s a longer visit with more in it. A glasses exam is about 30 minutes. A contact lens exam runs about 45 because of the fitting work: the lenses go back in, we record how each one sits, and the doctor refracts you a second time over the top of them. The $139.99 covers all of that. The fitting is not billed on top.
Can I use my contact lens prescription for glasses?
No, and the reverse isn’t true either. They’re two different prescriptions. A contact lens sits on the eye and a spectacle lens sits about twelve millimetres in front of it, which changes the power needed. Your contact lens prescription also names the brand, base curve and diameter, none of which mean anything to a pair of glasses.
I’ve never worn contacts. Will I be able to get them in?
Most people manage it the same day with someone showing them how. We won’t send you out with lenses you can’t handle yet, and there’s no charge for the extra few minutes it takes to learn.
Do I have to buy my lenses from you?
No. Your prescription is yours by law and we hand it over before you leave. We order lenses here because it’s convenient, not because you’re obliged.
Should I wear my lenses to the appointment?
Wear them in and bring the case. We take them out for the health checks, then put them back in for the fitting, so we need both states.
Will my eyes be dilated?
No. We photograph the retina instead, so there are no dilation drops, nothing to sting, and nothing to blur the rest of your day.
Do you take walk-ins?
Yes, though a contact lens exam is the longer appointment, so booking a time is the surer way to get one on the day you want it. Online booking takes about a minute.
